Fifth Faculty Seminars of Fall 2018-2019 Term
Faculty of Education Fall 2018-2019 Faculty Seminars will be continuing with Dr. Bilge Tutak's work titled "General overview of Turkish Antarctic Research" on December 14, 2018. The language of the presentation will be English, and it will be held at EF 506 at 13:00 pm. The abstract of the work is given below.
Abstract:
Turkey's journey for Antarctica is nothing new. In fact, the first Turkish scientist, Prof. Atok Karaali, went to Antarctica in 1967 as part of a US expedition and stayed there for more than a year, but now before Piri Reis a cartographer plotted the closest points to Antarctica in 1513. After Prof. Karaali, several Turkish scientists went to Antarctica, but never with Turkish expedition. Turkey ratified the Antarctic Treaty at 1996, but didn't follow through. Almost 30 years after the ratification of the Treaty, Turkey finally had the first Turkish Antarctic Expedition (TAE-I) in early 2017. Along with the expedition, Turkey ratified one of the most important part of the Antarctic Treaty, that is Madrid Protocol: Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty and all its annexes. TAE-I was conducted with 9 scientists, and in 2018 TAE-II was conducted with 18 scientists and 13 projects. 8 of the projects on board the vessel with 8 scientists sailed along the Western Antarctic Peninsula during March 2018. The operations included the setup of a 10 people camp site along Risopatron Station (Chile) with 5 projects on Robert Island. Along the route on the ship projects were conducted on board the vessel mainly included earth sciences (glaciology, geology, marine geology and sedimentology). In addition to the scientific projects, there was one education and an outreach programme conducted during the expedition by carrying out 300 laminated drawings of kids to the Horseshoe Island.
