The Department of Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education coordinates three  teacher training programs in Teaching Chemistry, Teaching Mathematics and Teaching Physics at the secondary school level. These programs are of five years in duration and the graduates earn the title of Master’s degree without Thesis (M. Ed.).
The department aims to produce science and mathematics educators to meet the increasing demand for high quality teaching. Graduates are expected to be reflective and competent educators, sensitive to the demands of their job, responsive to a developing education system and technological requirements, committed to continuing their own professional development and ready to play a leading role in the field of science and mathematics education.
Students in all three programs take their courses from Faculty of Arts and Sciences for the first two years and from Faculty of Education for the last three years. Courses offered by the Faculty of Education cover curriculum and professional studies introducing various aspects of education, psychology, guidance, and classroom management. Among the courses taken from Faculty of Education, courses offered by the Department of Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education aims to integrate theoretical considerations in the field with methodology and practical applications in the selected secondary schools.
The M.S. program in Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work, a non credit seminar and a Master’s Thesis. Elective courses in the program may be chosen from the courses offered by the department, other departments in the university, or the Institute being subject to the approval of the advisors. Students with a B.S. or B.A. degree from the Faculties of Education, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and related fields can apply for the M.S. Program. The candidates must complete the course work in two successive semesters; however students with a non-education background may be allowed to extend their course work at the discretion of the advisor and the Institute.
There is also a Ph.D. program in Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education which comprises a minimum of 25 credits of course work and a doctoral dissertation. Elective courses may be chosen from among the courses offered by the Program, the Institute or the University, subject to the approval of the advisors. Students with a M.S. degree from the faculties of Education, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and related fields can apply for the Ph.D. Program in Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education. The candidates must complete the course work in two successive semesters; however, students with a non-education background may be allowed to extend their course work.
